Five Unique Japanese-Style Starbucks Around the Country

In honor of "Wooden House Day" on 18th October, we've selected unique wood Starbucks around Japan.

1. Hirosaki Koen-mae Store (Aomori Prefecture, Tohoku Region)

This café, which is designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property, is a wooden building constructed in 1917. It has a characteristic design that combines Japanese and European aesthetics. You can find it near Hirosaki Castle Park, which is one of Japan's most famous cherry blossoms spots.

2. Izumo Taisha Store (Shimane Prefecture, Sanin Region)

The "marriage" between Izumotaisha Shrine and Starbucks is the design theme. It's just in front of the "Ootorii" gate at the main entrance and you can enjoy the views of the shrine from the second-floor windows.

3. Dazaifutenmangu Omotesando Store (Fukuoka Prefecture, Kyushu Region)

Architect Kengo Kuma designed this characteristic building that features traditional woodwork. It celebrates "the harmony of tradition and modernity with natural materials" and it's located near the Torii gate that faces the main entrance to Dazaifutenmangu Shrine.

4. Kobe Kitano Ijinkan Store (Hyogo Prefecture, Kansai Region)

This café, which was originally a two-story wooden house built in 1907, is also designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property. The house was damaged in the Great Hanshin earthquake in 1995 and it was to be demolished, but the city of Kobe dismantled, preserved, restored, and reconstructed it at its current location.

5. Meguro Store (Tokyo, Kanto Region)

Asa-no-ha patterned (a repeating six-sided geometric design that resembles the leaves of the hemp plant) Kumiko (a traditional Japanese woodworking technique) decorate the store shelves and the wood boards that line the interior of the café tell the story of coffee. In addition to drinks and mugs that you can only find there, you can also enjoy Starbucks Reserve® coffee as well as flavorful coffee brewed from Clover brewing machines.
