As part of the JR East Japan Urban Development Program, the new commercial building "Ryogoku-Edo NOREN" was launched in November 2018 at the west entrance of the JR Ryogoku station.

In order to help people to have a rich experience with Edo's food culture, there are many delicious dishes that represent the time of Edo, accompanied by the gift area and the travel information service. Through the enjoyment of various kinds of food and the culture of local Ryogoku, visitors can better understand the Edo culture.

This article will guide you through a visit to one of most popular restaurants "Nezu Torihana," and to enjoy the rare and dreamy shamo chicken cuisine in Tokyo!

Giving the 1929 historic train station a new life, the "Ryogoku-Edo NOREN" is a new business installation, but it is full of the taste of the old Edo houses.

As soon as you walk in from the outside, you will feel as if you walked through time. The layout and arrangement of the shops make people feel like time travelers, shuttling through the nostalgic fun of enjoying the old world. There is also a huge sumo ring in the middle, a symbol that reveals the importance of Ryogoku. Now, we can witness people taking pictures of the rarely-seen sumo ring.

There are 10 gourmet resaurants, a special local gift shop, a traditional artifacts sale section, as well as the Ryogoku tourism office. It can be said to be a commercial complex combining tourism, shopping, food, and information service. I strongly recommend those who visit Ryogoku to come and experience the downtown Tokyo culture and the Edo food culture.

The 10 gourmet restaurants in the "Ryogoku-Edo NOREN," such as tempura, sushi, buckwheat noodle, Yakitori, taizake, Sojo, Fukagawa, sumo hotpot, desserts, etc., each has their own characteristics. The "Nezu Torihana" on the first floor is a skewer and BBQ restaurant, providing rare Tokyo shamo chicken cuisine. The signature dishes are the shamo chicken rice, which can be said a high class enjoyment of Tokyo, and the shamo chicken pot that is Ryoma Sakamoto's favorite.

Shamo chicken is a kind of chicken whose temper is agrressive. Thus, other than for food, it is also often used for entertainment and appreciation as well. It was from Taihoku in the time of Edo. After being reformed, it has become a unique livestock in Japan. Tokyo shamo chicken is a rare variety, whose meat quality is red with less fat. The meat is elastic, juicy and chewy, having a fresh taste with depth, which is the biggest reason for its popularity.

Not many restaurants in Tokyo use this ingredient, and "Nezu Torihana" is the only one in the Bunkyo region, which now can be enjoyed in "Edo NOREN" in Ryogoku.

They use the shamo chicken produced in the Asano chicken farm in Akiruno at the outskirts of Tokyo. As the supply is very limited, in order to maximize its deliciousness, the chef's charcoal grilling techniques and making of sauces are very exquisite.

If you come for lunch, it is recommended to order their most popular Tokyo shamo chicken and egg rice bowl (Oyakodon). If it is dinner time, the restaurant's confidence dish, skewer set is a good choice. You can enjoy all parts of the chicken slowly and spend a good night together with a variety of Japanese sake in the store.

The Tokyo shamo chicken and egg rice bowl exudes an elegant yet full-fledged Japanese-style rich soup flavor. The delicate meat and fresh juice of the shamo chicken becomes more energetic with the delicate and slightly sweet sauce.

The most surprising is the way the store handles the eggs. They boil them in the sauce and immediately pour them on the rice when they are the smoothest and tenderest. Finally, on the top, they crack a raw shamo chicken egg which has just been harvested in the morning. The combination of two different ways of eating eggs makes the whole meal more gorgeous and wonderful. When all the ingredients are combined with the dual play of the eggs, the wonderful taste creates an unforgettable moment. Each ingredient is so harmonious in the symphony, but each has its own unique and intriguing personality, which is worthy of a taste.

There is also a special dish in the shop—Chicken Hitsumabushi, which gives you two means of pleasure at a time. First of all, eat a few mouthfuls of yakitori placed on the white rice. The roasted, slightly scorched aromatic chichen and the thick, sweet juice match the white rice very well. But make sure not to eat all of it just yet.

Next, put the green onion, sesame seeds, and mitsuba into the rest of the yakitori rice bowl, and then add in hot soup. It will become a bowl of yakitori soaked rice. The thick, sweet juice gives out a different tenderness with the combination of the hot soup. As the end of the meal, it is just fresh and right as it is.
