[Economical 500-yen Gourmet in Japan] 500 yen Tonkotsu Ramen "Hakata Tenjin"

[Economical 500-yen Gourmet in Japan] 500 yen Tonkotsu Ramen "Hakata Tenjin"

November 4, 2019
This time, I would like to share with you a tonkatsu ramen shop -- "Hakata Tenjin" -- where you can enjoy a meal for just 500 yen. Hakata Tenjin has shops in many places, including Shinjuku, Shinbashi, Shibuya, and Ikebukuro.

The Shibuya South Exit shop introduced in this article is open from 11:00 a.m. in the morning to 3:30 a.m. in the middle of the night. Consider here if you are a traveler who wants to enjoy the nightlife in Shibuya!

There is a counter area and a seating area in the shop. There are no entrances or walls, so everyone can freely enter and exit from anywhere. Although it looks old, the shop is kept very clean. If you sit at the counter, you can see the staff preparing the food.

This time, I chose the signature ramen. After ordering, the ramen was brought to me in less than five minutes.

It has milky white broth from the pork bones, with a bit of oil over it. So far, my impression of Japanese ramen is that it is very thick and salty, and I could never finish the soup. However, Hakata Tenjin's broth is not too salty. It has a light flavor, yet you can still taste the flavor of the pork bones. After finishing the noodles, I have no issue drinking the soup! I think it is more in line with the tastes of foreigners.

The use of very fine noodles is one of the characteristics of Hakata Ramen. The noodles are slightly hard and chewy. The noodles have fully absorbed the broth, and diners can't help but slurp them into their mouths.

No matter which ramen you choose at Hakata Tenjin, you can add noodles one time for free. It is called "kaedama" in Japanese. It is a fantastic deal for 500 yen! In fact, there are enough noodles even if you don't add more. The amount is just right for me, not making me too full. Travelers who have a big appetite can choose to add more noodles!

The staff kindly explained to me the seasonings on the table in English (laugh). There are spicy pickled vegetables, white sesame, red ginger, spicy oil, pepper, and minced garlic, all of which can be added freely according to individual taste!

In addition to ramen, you can also order other items, especially Hakata Tenjin's instant noodles, which you can get as a souvenir. The shop is quite tourist-friendly as its menu is also marked in English.

The area around Shibuya Station is currently under construction. The route may be different when you go next time. I recommend using PinnARafter you leave the station, so you won't have to worry about getting lost!

1. From the South Gate of the JR Shibuya Station, walk in the direction of the west entrance. If you see "Midori no Madoguchi" on the left hand side, it means that you are heading in the right direction.
2. Go towards the right for 5 seconds and you will see a road leading to the opposite side. After crossing the road, enter the alley of Yokohama Bank.
3. Turn right after an izakaya called "Katsuo" and you will see Hakata Tenjin on your right hand side!

Finally, I want to tell you⋯⋯

Although I went there close to dinner time, there were not many diners in the shop. Most of them are office workers who are just getting off work and going home. Long business hours makes the shop suitable for either lunch, dinner, or a late-night snack. Travelers living near Shibuya should come try it!
