[Economical 500-yen Gourmet in Japan] Enjoy inexpensive, local, and healthy udon noodles at "Sanuki Udon Kono" in Ikebukuro

[Economical 500-yen Gourmet in Japan] Enjoy inexpensive, local, and healthy udon noodles at "Sanuki Udon Kono" in Ikebukuro

December 2, 2019
Sanuki Udon Kono is about 10 minutes of walk from the west exit of JR Ikebukuro Station. Compared to the numerous restaurants and izakayas on the main roads, it is easy to miss Sanuki Udon Kono, which has no eye-catching signs. However, this restaurant has been selected as one of the top 100 restaurants in Japan for two consecutive years by "Tabelog", Japan's biggest gourmet review website, and has won the hearts of many foodies.

At the center of the "Sanuki Udon Kono" is a large table with nine seats. The counter has six seats. The walls are covered with notices, posters, and newspapers. It is a simple and authentic little shop.

Usually, the owner looks after the shop alone, so many things are self-service. The fried food, the dried fish rice, etc., are all at the counter to be taken by customers. Then, they are counted at checkout. Although there is no English menu, there are pictures attached, so don't worry about ordering.

Sanuki Udon Kouno's characteristic is that it continues to use broth that has been cooked for two hours using dried fish from Ibuki Island in Kagawa Prefecture. Ibuki Island has the highest quality of dried fish in Japan. There is no use of acidification inhibitors, so there is no way to prepare it in advance. The amount of dried to be used each day must be sent directly from Kagawa Prefecture to the restaurant every day. Therefore, the udon noodles are limited in quantity. About 100 bowls are sold every day. You will have to wait until the next day if it sells out!

This time, I chose the basic udon noodles, which costs only 400 yen. There are bean skin and chopped green onions in the noodle soup. The chewy udon noodles, the carefully prepared broth, and the aroma of the dried fish scattered in one's mouth all serve to bring back a special nostalgic flavor. It is no wonder that there are so many regular customers in the restaurant.

If you feel that the amount of Udon noodles is not enough, you can add from a variety of side dishes in the restaurant. I heard that the most popular side dish from women is the dried fish rice. The dried fish from Ibuki Island has very soft bones which is rich in calcium. I want to give it a try when I come next time! In addition, there are many kinds of fried food. On the day I was there, many people chose to assorted fried dried fish.

If you want to add flavors to the udon noodles, you can also choose chili or refreshing citrus.

Only 3 minutes from Ikebukuro Station
1. After exiting from the west exit of JR Ikebukuro Station, walk along the left side of the main road between McDonald's and BIC CAMERA for about 10 minutes.
2. From Exit C2 of Ikebukuro Station on the Fukutoshin Line (Metro), walk left for about 3 minutes.

Conclusion

This Sanuki Udon Kouno restaurant is located away from the busy Ikebukuro area where everyone usually goes, so there are fewer tourists. In addition, Rikkyo University is nearby. On the day I was there, there were three university students coming to the restaurant who chatted with the owner. It seems that they have a very good relationship. I feel that this is a shop that is loved by local residents and students!

This restaurant has good CP value and is worth a visit by travelers who like udon noodles and want to experience an authentic Japanese atmosphere!
