September 18th is "Shimakutoba Day".
"Shimakutoba" is Okinawa's traditional language (dialect). With the language in decline due to the spread of standard Japanese language, this day was established in 2006 in order to "pass along an important part of local culture to the next generation". There are many local dialects in other parts of Japan besides Okinawa.
